AVP of Student Services Becomes President of ArSAA

Assistant Vice President for Student Services John Fincher was elected as the 55th President of the ��Ƶ Student Affairs Association (ArSAA), during the annual Partners for Student Success Conference held in Hot Springs, ��Ƶ from October 5 through October 7, 2016.

Fincher has represented the institution on ArSAA since 2013.

Founded in 1962 as the ��Ƶ Personnel and Guidance Association, ArSAA is an independent non-profit organization supported by institutional memberships from the 42 ��Ƶ Colleges and Universities.

The organization exists to provide professional development opportunities, promote best practices and professional standards among institutions, and serve as the statewide voice for student affairs personnel and administration.

UCA’s Division of International Engagement Hosts Candlelight Gathering

The University of Central ��Ƶ Division of International Engagement sponsored a Candlelight Gathering to provide students, faculty, staff and community members an opportunity to offer friendship and support to those impacted by Hurricane Matthew.

UCA enrolls 65 international students from the Caribbean, where the hurricane is creating a path of devastation. In addition, many students, faculty, staff and community members have friends and family in coastal areas of the U.S., who are also preparing for this storm.

The Candlelight Gathering was held outside Ferguson Chapel, near the Student Center, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., October 6th . The event was open to all.

SLH Association Hosts “The Way We Talk” Film Screening At UCA

In honor of International Stuttering Awareness Month, the UCA Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association hosted a film screening that depicts a personal journey with stuttering and “how hard it is to say what’s in your heart.”

The title of the documentary is “The Way We Talk.” The event was held on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Ida Waldran Auditorium on the University of Central ��Ƶ Campus.

UCA has the state’s only specialized stuttering clinic, which allows faculty not only to train graduate students, but also to provide services to children and adults who stutter, as well as their families.

UCA Hosts Second Annual Day of Mindfulness

October 4, 2016 was UCA’s second annual Day of Mindfulness.

The goal of UCA’s Day of Mindfulness is to de-stress, relax, and deal with the anxiety, stress, and depression that hinder living in the moment.

Because national studies cite anxiety, stress, and depression as some of the greatest obstacles to college student success, the Day of Mindfulness is intended to introduce students, as well as staff and faculty, to the benefits of purposeful practices such as yoga, art therapy, and meditation.

Activities throughout the week included walking meditation, zazen (sitting meditation), bubble and dog therapy, chalk mandalas, yoga on the lawn, a laybrinth walk, and a nature reserve walk.

UCA HPER Center Announces Trick or Trot 2016

Trick or Trot 2016 will be Thursday, October 27th. T-shirt pick-up is at 7:15 p.m. and the race starts at 8:00 p.m.

Trick or Trot is an approximately 1.5 mile fun walk/run around campus that takes place at night. The race begins and ends at Estes Stadium, and costs $10 to enter, which includes the prices of the t-shirt.

Students must be registered by October 20th to guarantee a t-shirt size, and registration forms can be picked up at the HPER Center Check-in Desk.

Thre will be prizes for Top Three females/males, and everyone is encouraged to wear their coolest Halloween costumes!
Friends and family are welcome, but no pets are allowed.
