The University of Central 淫性视频 Police Department is promoting pedestrian safety through its 鈥淏rake for Bears鈥� campaign scheduled for Nov. 3.

Volunteers will be encouraging safety awareness throughout the day at various crosswalks. UCA police and volunteers will be distributing educational fliers to pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists along crosswalks at Bruce Streets and Donaghey Ave. Other locations may be determined at a later date.

UCA Police officials say pedestrian safety is a major concern.

鈥淲e want our campus and the Conway community to be alert and be safe,鈥� said Arch Jones, Jr., director of organizational & community services for UCAPD.

The police department wants to emphasize not only drivers need to be alert, but also pedestrians.

鈥� No matter who has the right-of-way, we all need to be alert. Pedestrian safety is everyone鈥檚 business,”听Jones said.

The University of Central 淫性视频 unveiled its new collegiate license plate on Oct.7听 during the UCA Foundation Scholarship Reception at McCastlain Hall.

The new license plate displays the revamped athletic logo. More than 85% of the proceeds from the license plates go directly to fund academic scholarships for deserving students.

“This is an excellent partnership with the state of 淫性视频,” UCA President Allen Meadors said.听“Our alums and friends can show their UCA pride by purchasing Bear plates and help fund scholarships for our students.”

The UCA License Plate Program Scholarship is a great way to promote UCA and to help a legacy student, said Shelley Mehl, vice president of advancement.

The UCA License Plate Program Scholarship is awarded to full-time students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and who is child or grandchild of a UCA graduate.听 Each applicant must have demonstrated leadership and service and submit a 250-300 word essay explaining their choice of field of study.

Fourteen recipients were awarded scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year. Officials hope to see an increase in purchases of the license plates, which would provide more scholarships to students.

The UCA license plate can be purchased through any 淫性视频 Revenue Office.听 The UCA Foundation receives $25 from each plate purchased. The purchase of the plate is recognized as a tax-deductible contribution.

The UCA Distinguished Lecture series continues Oct. 19, with humorist and best-selling author Dave Barry at Reynolds Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m. 听Barry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work has appeared in more than 500 newspapers in the U.S. and abroad. Boris Godunov to Continue Met Series at UCA

A new production of Modest Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov will continue the 2010-11 season of Captured Live from the Met @ UCA at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24 in Reynolds Performance Hall. Boris Godunov will be the second of 10 high definition transmissions of Metropolitan Opera performances in the series sponsored by UCA鈥檚 College of Fine Arts and Communication. 2010 Henderson/Block Gospel Benefit Concert Slated for Oct. 25

The 2010 Henderson/Block Gospel Benefit Concert will be held Monday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in Ida Waldran. This event is held in memory of Ryan Henderson and Chavares Block who were victims of an on-campus shooting in 2008.听 Last year鈥檚 benefit raised enough funds to provide two $1,000 scholarships to students from Dermott and Hall, the high school alma maters of Chavares and Ryan.听 A $5 donation is requested for admission.听 Individuals can also make a donation. UCA Student Health Clinic Annual Flu Shot Campaign

The annual Flu Shot Campain is scheduled for Oct. 27 and Oct. 28 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. for students and after Nov. 1 for faculty and staff. There will be no charge for the flu shots. The shots will be given on a first come, first served basis. Fundraiser for the Mary Landreth Scholarship Fund Slated 听Oct. 21

Watch a movie under the stars and help raise funds for a good cause on Oct. 21 at the Silver Moon Cinema. Your $2 donation will help raise money for the Mary Landreth Scholarship Fund. Mary was killed in听an automobile accident听coming back from a History Day Event on March 10, 2000. The movie will begin at dusk in downtown Conway in front of Ye Old Daisy Shop. Baum Gallery of Fine Art Fall Exhibition Opens

The Baum Gallery of Fine fall exhibition will be on view through Oct. 28. 听All gallery exhibits and events are free and open to the public. UCA Theatre to Present Greek Tragedy

UCA Theatre will present The Bacchae by Euripides on Oct. 28 – Oct. 29 and Nov. 3听– Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bridges/Larson Theatre of the Snow Fine Arts Center. The production has been updated with contemporary music, dance, and multimedia. The play is under the direction of Shauna C. Meador, associate professor of theatre, with set design by assistant professor of digital film, Scott Meador. Costume design is by senior theatre major, Eriko Terao, with choreography by UCA student Duy Nguyen. Tickets are $10 for the general public and听two free with a current UCA I.D. The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Orchestra to Appear at UCA

The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Orchestra, with pianist Jonathan Biss, will visit UCA as Artist in Residence Oct. 28- Oct. 29.听The Academy will hold an open rehearsal for UCA students, members of the Conway Symphony Orchestra and members of youth/high school orchestras from 6-6:30 p.m., Oct. 28 听in Reynolds Performance Hall prior to its public performance at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds. 听Tickets to the concert are $30-$40 for adults, $27-$37 for senior citizens, $25-$35 for UCA alumni, $23-$33 for UCA faculty and staff, $10 for students and free for UCA students with a current student I.D. Octubafest Events Scheduled at Snow Fine Arts Center

Gale Garrison Named Employee of the Quarter

Gale Garrison has been named the Employee of the Quarter for the first quarter. Gale is a financial aid specialist in the Student Financial Aid Office.听 She has worked at the University of Central 淫性视频 for more than 34 years.

Gale鈥檚 job duties include processing and posting all the athletic, academic and private scholarships received. Gale听was听described as a loyal and听dependable employee by her colleagues.

鈥淚t would be a challenge to find another employee on this campus that has as much paperwork听 and/or money come across their desk,鈥澨齩ne colleague wrote. 鈥溾��Starting in the beginning of summer and lasting through September, she is responsible for making sure every student who receives a scholarship has been credited with the proper amount (which is posted one at a time).听 Her work-week stretches into hours of comp. time.听 Her rapport with the students and staff is both professional and gracious.听 She always does what needs to be done to assure that each student is awarded properly and takes great pride in her work.听 She is a joy to work with as well.鈥�

The Staff Senate is now accepting applications for professional development funds.听 The Staff Senate Professional Development Fund was established to assist a staff employee in pursuing opportunities for professional development. 听The senate seeks to advance opportunities of continuing education, advanced or higher education, certification programs, or conference participation.

Dr. Robert Reising鈥檚 recent book Chasing Moonlight, the biography of “Moonlight” Graham of the movie 鈥淔ield of Dreams鈥�, will appear in paperback in March 2011. Reising co-authored the book with Brett Friedlander, a free-lance sports writer. 听Published in April of 2009, on the eve of the Major-League baseball season, the book has gone through two printings while garnering runner-up honors听in three international book competitions, including the Casey Award as “The best baseball book of 2009.” Reising is the night supervisor of the Academic Success Center.

Power Surge and HEOA Compliance

The IT Data Center uses a lot of electricity to keep all the systems and services running. So much so that now we have exceeded our capacity. In order to alleviate this problem we will be upgrading the electrical circuits into the Data Center and installing a new larger uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The UPS is what helps keep the Data Center running in the event of a power failure. Unfortunately the replacement of the UPS means that power has to be shut off to the Data Center, and that means IT services will be unavailable. This time frame for this work has not yet been scheduled, but will be announced ahead of time and minimized as much as possible.

HEOA Compliance

In order to comply with the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 your students may notice a new login notice appearing occasionally when using various campus computer labs. This notice displays a reminder about the penalties for the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted materials.

• UCA Sees Increase in Freshmen Enrollment for Fall 2010 —UCA had a 3.9 percent increase in freshman enrollment, bringing the freshman class to 1,846 students for the fall of 2010. This year鈥檚 transfer student enrollment is 604 — up 20.8 percent — compared to 500 last year. Of 604 transfer students, 30% were freshmen transfers.听

• UCA Host Dedication for STEM Residential College — UCA officials held a dedication for its new residential college designed to prepare students for careers in technology and science. 听The keynote speaker was Gov. Mike Beebe.
• Rollins College Philosopher Gives Lecture on Thomas Jefferson’s Ideology — Creston Davis, an assistant professor of religion and philosophy at Rollins College in Winterpark, Fla., visited the university last month.听He gave a lecture on “Jefferson’s Monticello: Contradiction, Ideology, and the Foundations of America.”
• UCA Alumnus Receives Scholarship to Study in Morocco — UCA alumnus Jacob Perry was awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar scholarship to Morocco by Rotary International. Jacob will be studying Arabic at the University Mohamed V in Rabat, Morocco. He is one of more than 500 students from 29 countries who will be studying abroad for the 2010-2011 academic year as Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars.
• Al “Papa Rap” Lopez Performs at UCA — Al Lopez concluded UCA鈥檚 Mexican Bi-centennial and Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations with a performance that promoted unity and understanding of different cultures.
• CLEAR Center Receives $5,000 Grant from Trucking Industry Defense Association — The Center for Cooperative Logistics Education, Advancement, and Research (CLEAR) Center was one of four programs nationwide chosen to receive a $5,000 grant from the Trucking Industry Defense Association.听
• Chemistry Department听Receives Nearly听$500,000 in Research听Grants —The Department of Chemistry was awarded nearly $500,000 in external funding by the National Science Foundation. Three research grants, totaling $498,622, will fund projects for UCA undergraduate chemistry students to conduct research in gas-phase chemistry, surface chemistry, and archeological chemistry.
• UCA Unplugged XVI to Feature The Smart Brothers and Open Mic Performers — The university hosted the 16th annual UCA Unplugged acoustic concert on Oct. 15听to raise 听funds for the UCA Emergency Student Loan Fund.听
• UCA Graduates Exceed State Average on Praxis III — Graduates from the College of Education exceeded state average in classroom teaching performance assessment, according to 2010 Praxis III results released by the 淫性视频 Department of Education.

This annual event is held in memory of Ryan Henderson and Chavares Block who were victims of an on-campus shooting in 2008.听听 Henderson, 18, of Little Rock, was a freshman at the time of the shooting. Block, 19, of Dermott, was a sophomore pre-engineering major.

Freedom of Information Requests

The 淫性视频 Freedom of Information Act,听 Ark. Code Ann. 搂25-19-101 et seq. (“Act”), guarantees 淫性视频 citizens access to public records held by public bodies and public officials.听 In the past month, the division received and responded to 24 Freedom of Information requests.

Please join the Physical Plant in welcoming Grounds Manager Joe Wright and Grounds Landscape Supervisor Kevin Carter. Joe and his wife have two sons and come to us from Dallas, where Joe served for the past five years as grounds upervisor for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.听 Joe attended UCA from 1996 to 2001 and received his associates degree in 2009 from West Wood College.

Kevin听 and his wife are Conway residents. Kevin has owned and operated his own grounds and landscape business since 2004.听 Kevin graduated with honors from Conway High School in 2006 and in May 2010 graduated from UCA with a bachelor of business administration degree.

The Physical Plant is excited about the energy, experience, and new perspective Joe and Kevin will bring to the Grounds Department and the UCA campus.
